Administrative/Presiding Judge David Hamilton Orders Dress Code Policy for Litigants and Attorneys

Akron Municipal Court Administrative/Presiding Judge David Hamilton is implementing a new dress code policy for litigants, attorneys and other licensed counsel while on site at the Akron Municipal Courthouse and surrounding premises, effective July 1, 2025.

The signed administrative order is attached. The administrative order states that the following clothing items are unacceptable, including but are not limited to:

  • Sunglasses
  • Flip flops or house slippers
  • Hair rollers, bonnets, baseball or other caps, hoodies or face masks
  • Non-religious headscarves
  • Bath robes
  • Pajamas or other clothing that resembles sleepwear
  • Pants without belt (exposing undergarments)
  • Short pants (mid-thigh or above)
  • Skirts (mid-thigh or above) or dresses (mid-thigh or above)
  • Underwear as outward clothing
  • Halter tops, tank tops, crop tops, muscle shirts, see-through tops, bare midriff tops, tops with open backs
  • Body suits, swimwear or bathing suits
  • Ripped/torn pants, shirts or skirts
  • Clothing with vulgar/inappropriate writing, derogatory language, logos (including sexual, drug, tobacco, gang affiliations or alcohol related language), obscene or suggested writing on the clothing

Additional items mentioned in the attachment that are not related to clothing/attire:

  • No children allowed in Court Area
  • No food or drink permitted in the courtroom, with the exception of water
  • Electronic recordings, transmitting devices (including cell phones), pagers and other electronic devices must be turned off before entering the courtroom.
